One of the most common reasons patients seek orthodontic treatment is for an over-crowded jaw – basically, feeling you have too many teeth, teeth which are often misaligned or partially covering each other.
Teeth may be badly aligned because the dental arch is small, and/or because the teeth are large. Sometimes there isn't enough space for all your teeth to come through properly.
Crowded teeth can cause a range of problems. The bones and gums around the roots of extremely crowded teeth may become thin and start to recede as a result of severe crowding. This bone recession can eventually lead to loose teeth and even tooth loss.
An over-crowded jaw can also lead to problems with your bite – how your teeth come together. This can affect how you bite and chew food, can impact on your self-confidence, and can also make it difficult to keep your teeth clean. When teeth are too crowded or too close together, it becomes very difficult to brush effectively, and especially difficult to clean in between the teeth. This can lead to a build-up of plaque, tooth decay, gum problems and bad breath.
At The Liverpool Brace Place we offer a large number of solutions for crowded teeth. Whether you are referred to us by your own dentist or visit us independently because you're unhappy with your teeth, the first thing we'll do is carry out a thorough orthodontic assessment.
Your exact treatment will depend on the severity of your overcrowding. We have fixed braces available in either traditional metal or tooth-coloured ceramic material. These comprise small brackets, which are fitted to your teeth, and very thin metal or clear wires that are attached between them and gently move your teeth into their new, beautifully aligned positions. The majority of cases are also suitable for treatment with lingual braces, which work in a very similar way to traditional braces but are attached to the back of the teeth, meaning they are completely invisible when you smile.
